Australia is known across the world as a country where the wildlife is out to get you. While this may be true of some animals in Australia, it certainly doesn’t ring true for all of them.

We’ve collected a list of some fascinating insects and animals that are native to Australia. You’ll be surprised to know they’re not all as deadly as they seem!

Golden Orb Weaver

The female spiders are mostly black-brown and have yellow banded legs, while the males are smaller and are a red-brown colour. They are known for their incredibly strong and sticky webs that are wheel-shaped and built in areas between trees where insects are likely to fly.

Golden Orb webs can catch insects as small as moths and animals as large as birds or bats. This is where the spider gets their alternative name “the bird eating spider”. You’ll find the spider in its habitat in dry forests, woodlands, coastal sand dunes, and mangrove habitats. Although their bite is not deadly to humans, it will cause mild pain, numbness, nausea, and swelling. Even though these symptoms are not deadly, it is important to seek medical attention if you are bitten by a Golden Orb.

Spiny Leaf Insect

A spiny leaf insect is a type of stick insect phasmid — an insect that eats leaves and resembles a stick. The two genders differ for the most part with the males being able to fly and live up to 8 months, while the females cannot fly but will live to around 18 months. The females can also reach up to 30cm long.

With the ability to lay thousands of eggs during their lives, the female spiny leaf can also reproduce without the help of a male. This unique ability is called parthenogenesis and means that all the eggs will be female. These eggs can take up to two years to hatch.

Funnel Web Spider

The worst part about this news is that these spiders don’t like to build their webs in bush or forest but prefer suburban houses and neighbourhoods. Before the introduction of the antivenom in 1981, thirteen known deaths, as well as some serious medical incidents, occurred due to this spider’s bite.

The funnel web can mostly be found in Sydney, can range from black to brown and in size from 1cm-5cm. Seek medical attention immediately if you are bitten by a funnel web. The funnel web are mostly ground dwellers, opting to dig a series of underground tunnels. These tunnels can be identified by holes in the ground with silk-like trails leading from them.

Carpet Python

Found throughout the northern, eastern, and southern parts of Australia, the carpet python lives in forests, rural lands, coastal areas, and suburban gardens. The python can also grow to more than 3m in length, and they vary in colour and pattern. However, most are olive green with dark patterns. As mentioned the python is not venomous, but do seek immediate medical attention following any bite. Along with this, exert caution when they are in your home.
