Mosquitoes and Your Blood

mosquitoVampire stories are all the rage now and most of the new generation of blood suckers are not scary demons but cool and misunderstood creatures. This new slant on bloodsucking doesn’t apply to mosquitoes, who are still as loathed and despised as ever, and for good reason. Despite this general hate, many of us do not really understand what is going on when a mosquito bites us.

For starters, it is only female mosquitoes that suck blood from humans, the male survives on plants and flowers for food. The female doesn’t eat the blood but uses it for the development of her eggs. The female finds people by detecting the carbon dioxide that we breathe out, they are able to sniff someone out from 50 metres away.

Mosquitoes carry a number of diseases, including malaria, yellow fever and dengue fever, they also transmit a number of different parasites, so preventing getting bitten is an extremely good idea. There are many methods of preventing mosquito bites, from citronella candles through to Deet based lotions to expensive bug zappers. You need to work out what will be best for you in any given situation as prevention is the key to controlling mosquitos.
