After a long, tiring week at work, the last thing you feel like doing is household chores that consume every hour of your precious weekend relaxation time. And yet, disregarding the chores will leave your house feeling cluttered and dirty. Luckily, we have some handy tips for smashing out the most dreary cleaning chores so that there is more time to spend doing the fun things that you love.

We’ve tried to focus specifically on those larger tasks that always seem to get postponed – usually indefinitely.

Cleaning Gutters

  • This is especially important to maintain during the rainy season. Debris can quickly clog the downspouts, resulting in water damage to your roof and possible interior leaking during heavy downpours.
  • Watch this Bunnings How to Clean Your Gutters video for an easy guide on how to quickly and effectively clean your gutters.

Pruning Trees

  • A tree may require pruning to remove diseased or storm-damaged branches, to prevent damage to your home, or to maintain the side growth on perimeter walls.
  • It is important to note that we are only advising you to attempt basic pruning of smaller branches. For larger jobs, it is always safer to contact a professional tree felling company.
  • Better Homes & Gardens provides a very informative step-by-step guide to pruning trees.

Cleaning Windows

  • The fastest and most effective way to clean windows is with vinegar and newspaper. For dirty exterior windows, we suggest that you first hose them down. Using warm, soapy water (dishwashing liquid works well), just quickly wash and then hose – this does not need to take a lot of time or be done perfectly as the vinegar and newspaper will effectively clean any areas you’ve missed. This is just to help remove the majority of dust/mud build up.
  • Great Day offers a simple guide on how to easily clean windows.

Cleaning Grout

  • Grout becomes very unsightly when there is a lot of dirt build-up. It is also the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Weekly tile cleaning does not effectively get into the smaller grooves between tiles. A handy tip for keeping shower grout cleaner for longer is to spray a bathroom cleaner after every shower and leave.
  • We just love the wikiHow tutorial on How to Clean Grout as it offers 4 alternative methods for easy grout cleaning.

Filing Paperwork

Isn’t it funny how this ‘easy’, non-cleaning task inevitably becomes part of the difficult chore category?

  • Do filing while listening to your favourite music or watching TV as it will help to make the task feel less boring. You can opt for a variety of storage methods – choose whichever suits your sorting style best and will make for the most effective retrieval when an important document is needed.
    • Manila files are an easy way to categorise paperwork, for example: E = Electricity; G = Gas; M = Medical; etc.
    • Using a desktop filing tray will help you sort bills and stay on top of due payments. As an example, you can label the top tray Urgent To Pay; middle tray Follow Up; and lower tray Paid To File.
    • Visit Officeworks for a wide range of inexpensive filing stationery.
