Cockroaches are infamous for their hardiness, in fact they are so resilient that many people think they could survive a nuclear holocaust and that they will inherit the Earth. Cockroaches have been around for over 350 million years, so it is not surprising that they are hardy creatures and while some of this is just myth and hype, there is no denying that cockroaches are some of the hardiest animals on the planet.
Many species of cockroach can survive and remain active without any food for over a month. They can even go without air for 45 minutes and some species can even recover after being drowned. There exoskeletons are also incredibly strong, able to withstand more pounds per square inch than just about any other creature on the planet. All this adds up to one rugged creature that can survive where most others couldn’t.
As for their reputed ability to survive a nuclear holocaust, while it is true that they have a far greater tolerance of radiation than humans, they are no hardier in this respect than most of their fellow insects. This is because insects cells do not divide constantly like humans do, rather they divide only when they moult. This means that they are far less susceptible to radiation.
