Many people dislike ants, a few even hate them, but for the most they do not fear them. In Australia, we have a few species that cause us some trouble, but there is a new kid on the block, one we should be more concerned about- the Argentine Ant. In this series we will show you why you should be more far more afraid of the invading Argentine Ants than you currently are.

Reason number five- the fifth reason we should be more afraid of Argentine Ants is that they are using humans in their plan for world domination. The only way they have been able to spread across the world into these massive supercolonies is by hitching a ride with us. Sure, we are responsible for transporting many of the worst pests around the world, but the Argentine Ant has a history of using other species for its own nefarious purposes in ways that other pests don’t.

The Argentine Ant has been using aphids for millennia in a distinctly human manner. They farm them. That’s right, Argentine Ants farm aphids for the sugary solution they excrete. They move them from plant to plant and even defend them from other insects. The Argentine Ant is able to manipulate other species to help with its invasion.

Many people dislike ants, a few even hate them, but for the most part they do not fear them. In Australia, we have a few species that cause us some trouble, but there is a new kid on the block, one we should be more concerned about- the Argentine Ant. In this series we will show you why you should be more far more afraid of the invading Argentine Ants than you currently are.

Reason number four- the fourth reason we should be more afraid of Argentine Ants is that they keep it in the family. They are one of the most successful invasive species on the planet because they form supercolonies and if their track record is anything to go by we are in real trouble here. In the hundred years since they began spreading their supercolonies have taken over almost a thousand kilometres of California, almost five hundred kilometres of Japan and there is one supercolony in Europe that covers almost 6000 kilometres. You read that right, one single supercolony of these ants covers almost 6000 kilometres of Europe.

Unlike other ant species, as Argentine Ants spread they stay genetically alike, meaning that instead of fighting each other, they work together, putting up a united front against other ants. The supercolony in Melbourne is already one hundred kilometres across and growing. Their strength is their unity.

Reason number three- the third reason we should be more worried about the invading Argentine Ant is that most of our poisons have no effect on them. Unlike other species of ants, when you spray Argentine Ants with regular pesticides, rather than dying—which is the usual reaction—they actually end up laying more eggs than usual. That’s right, spraying them with poison only increases their numbers.

Though it sounds like something out of a comic book, it is sadly true. This means that if we want to stop this invasion, or more realistically control it, then we need to start developing pesticides that work against them otherwise we will have to watch their numbers grow as they destroy our native ants and the wider environment.

In this series we will show you why you should be more far more afraid of the invading Argentine Ants than you currently are.

Reason number two- the second reason we should be more afraid of the invading Argentine Ant is that they are incredibly rapacious and destroy entire populations of native animals. Here in Australia they have wiped out many of our native ants in their quest for total domination. The supercolony of Argentine Ants in Melbourne have pushed all other types of ants out of an area 100 kilometres across and this has only taken them several decades to accomplish.

In California, where they have been established for about a century, they have taken over almost a thousand kilometre sweep of land, wiping out all other competitors and causing a devastating knock on effect throughout the food chain as they natural order collapses under the weight of this invader.

It has only taken them a few decades to do irreversible damage here, they are already in an unassailable position and it will only get worse.

In this series we will show you why you should be more far more afraid of the invading Argentine Ants than you currently are.

Reason number one- The first reason is self evident in their name, the Argentine Ant is not from here. Originating in Argentina, the ant threatens to throw our delicate ecosystem out of balance as it has done in many of the other countries that it has invaded in the past century. It has been listed as one of the 100 worst invaders of all time. As with any outside invader, they are removed from their natural predators meaning that their population will often explode. A recent report on ABC discussed the feral supercolony of Argentine Ants taking over in Melbourne. In fact, in the article they refer to this supercolony as being one of the largest in the world and the consequences it is having on the local ecosystem are massive.

Humans have spent many years wondering what it would be like to have superpowers, with creations like Superman, the Hulk, Dracula and so many other characters capturing our imaginations. While most of the superpowers covered in human fiction seem extremely unlikely to ever occur in the real world, there are animals here on this planet that have abilities akin to superpowers. In this series, we will look at seven different insect superpowers.

There is a species of termite that has a gun for a face, yup, a gun for a face. This may sound like some mad Japanese comic book character but it is totally true. This species of termites, with the predictably unpronounceable name of Nasutitermitinae, are from Africa and they have a fontanellar gun on their faces. This gun shots a projectile glue designed to stop ants in their tracks. If that weren’t enough, the glue that they shoot is also lethally poisonous to ants, meaning that once they have shoot them with this stuff, the ant is stuck in place until it dies.

This superpower is even more amazing considering the soldier ants that have the gun face are totally blind and yet are able to shoot with incredible accuracy over many centimetres using their sense of smell.

Describing a mosquito superpower is more likely to make you think of all the villains in comic books rather than the superheros, especially when you find out that their superpower allows them to know what your blood type is from across the room. In fact, mosquitoes can pinpoint your exact location and blood type from about forty metres away using a combination of smell, sight and heat detection. This incredible ability means that they can home in on those with type-O blood (their favourite kind) from a human scale of about two kilometres away.

The worst thing about this evil superpower that mosquitoes have is that they do not actually have to drink our blood. The only reason that most species of mosquitoes do it is so they can produce more eggs than normal. In other words, they would be just fine if they didn’t do it at all.

While most of the superpowers covered in human fiction seem extremely unlikely to ever occur in the real world, there are animals here on this planet that have abilities akin to superpowers.
Anyone who has tried to kill a fly by swatting it knows that this is no easy proposition. They seem to have a sixth sense that helps them evade a swat no matter how stealthy or sneaky you are. This superpower like ability comes from the flies’ incredible eyes and lightening fast nerves. Flies are able to see all around them, their vision covers the full 360 degrees and it only takes them 100 milliseconds to spot an incoming swat and to calculate exactly how far they have to move. The flies’ reaction time is far faster than ours, meaning that it is almost impossible to get them.

Scientists are still studying the fly nervous system, trying to learn how it reacts so fast. One thing they do know though is that they are not quick enough to avoid fly spray.

The ironclad beetle is well named. While most insects are easily crushed this robust creature has the hardest exoskeleton in the world (In case you have forgotten your high school biology, an exoskeleton is a skeleton on the outside of the body, which all insects have). While standing on most insects will squash them flat, the ironclads’ exoskeleton is so strong that there is no way a human can flatten them, unless of course they resort to using their superior brain power. This superpower like ability means that they are virtually indestructible.

The ironclad beetle is so incredibly tough that while other bugs get pinned into display cabinets the only way an entomologist can mount an ironclad beetle is by using a drill. There is even a subspecies called the diabolical ironclad beetle which is all black and has a satanic appearance.

In this series, we will look at seven different insect superpowers.

Most people have seen how moths and butterflies use clever patterns on their wings to trick predators into thinking that they are bigger than they are or that they are a different and more deadly species, but what do you do if your natural predator doesn’t use vision but rather sound to ‘see’ you? You do what the tiger moth does and create sonic illusions.

Spider moths are able to detect the bats high frequency sonar and can jam the signal. What makes this a superpower like ability is how they do this. They do not simply scream really loud to jam the bat’s sonar, but rather are able to face echoes of non-existent objects. In essence, they make bats see things that are not there, which sounds an awful lot like a superpower.
