For most people, the last thing they want to do is eat a cockroach, but they are considered a delicacy in a number of other cultures in both Asia and South America and the trend is catching on, all be it in a small way, here in Australia. While you are not likely to find your local McDonalds replaced with a cockroach chain anytime soon, there are more places where you can go to sample this interesting if somewhat repellent dish.
But what nutritional value can an insect have, on the surface it would seem like there would be little benefit from eating a cockroach. However, cockroaches are an excellent source of protein and iron and have very little fat. If you ate cockroach instead of steak, weight for weight, then you would be getting more protein with far less fat, though obviously for many the idea of eating a steak’s worth of cockroaches is far from appetising. As well as eating them, cockroaches can also be made into a tea, a tincture which many local New Orleanians use as a remedy to a variety of ailments.
